Little Yogis™ Reviews

Everyone’s having fun with Little Yogis.
These are just some of the things people are saying.

Wai Lana’s Little Yogis Kit

This unique yoga kit is based on a PBS series that encourages children to take up yoga. The kit includes a 60-minute video and yoga mat. It is designed to be a safe, easy, and fun way for your child to learn yoga. Pretend to be a cobra, bear, butterfly, bridge, tree, bow and arrow, and other fun things. The Yogi Mat has little cartoon yogis in action. It also comes with a convenient carrying bag and has an extra pocket for water and snacks. There will also be a CD coming out shortly; a collection of 21 songs that will encourage your child to dance, practice yoga, and relax as they ready for naptime. This kit is great fun and will help encourage your child's concentration and relaxation methods. It is a great tool for developing their bodies, focusing their minds, and improving balance. They will be exercising without realizing that it is one of the most important activities that they can engage in. This product is of the highest quality and is definitely a contribution for any time of the year.

"... an award-winner! Charming, with beautiful scenery. Great for children—but adults who are newcomers to yoga can benefit from this video as well! Great exercises for all ages! What a beautiful tape. It's her best! It's great! It's so sweet with the children. It's great for adults too. For someone just starting out, it can't hurt them. They can't overdo themselves. Tell Wai Lana we loved it."

The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval Winner, Spring 2004

Wai Lana, one of the pioneers in the world of instructional yoga, has brought her skills to the younger set with this all-in-one kit. Bundled together are a yoga mat, an instructional video, and a poster that illustrates positions and exercises. Testers really liked the feel and texture of the mat and were eager to get started. Wai Lana is accompanied in the video by children who appear to really be enjoying themselves. This enthusiasm rubbed off on our testers, who picked up on the instruction quite rapidly.

All year we've been reviewing fitness videos. We've come away sore, energized, and sweaty from some; confused and disappointed by others. Here are our picks for the best as the year winds down and you start thinking about videos as gifts.

Best Workout for Kids: Wai Lana's Little Yogis

This playful workout has kids pretending to be cobras, bears, butterflies, and beetles as they stretch and strengthen their growing bodies. It's not going to wear out your kids, but they'll have fun playing along and the video may help them develop the habit of exercise.

Top 15 Toys for Kids
Something for everyone on your list

With so many toys to pick from at this time of year, it is hard to know where to start. Do we buy the latest fads, or do we encourage our children to fill their lists with the kind of toys we think will last long past the Christmas holidays and into the new year? A good combination of the two is the way to go—especially if the "fad" is a toy you know will still be in the mix the day after Christmas.

To help you find some of the best toys of the season, we played, we talked, we listened, and we explored. The result is a list of toys we think you will find helpful. Not only are many of these items heirloom toys that are meant to be played with, but toys to encourage development and family fun.

And now for the 2003 Canadian Parents Online Top 15 Toys for kids ...

The Little Yogis Kit
Even though yoga has been practiced for the past five thousand years, its popularity has been exploding during the past few years. So it makes perfect sense that children are turning on to yoga too!

Wai Lana, the Number One yoga teacher in the world, has created a one-hour exercise video called LITTLE YOGIS specifically for children. The Little Yogis Kit includes the video, a foam floor mat, a poster showing various simple asana poses and stretches, and a colorful tote bag with shoulder strap.

Age: Children

Parent Talk
Our daughter received the Little Yogis Kit for her birthday. She was so excited to have her own tape and mat. The quality of the mat is better than the one I use, and the tape provides a lot of good instruction, at a child's level. - Janice

Yoga for a New Generation. Check out Wai Lana's Little Yogis video—an hour of pure fun. By pretending to be different animals like cobras, bears, and butterflies (as well as other fun things like balloons, bridges, and trees), you will stretch and strengthen your body, sharpen your mind, and improve your balance and coordination—without even knowing you're exercising. There's also a kit that includes a mat, poster, tote bag, and the video.

Children's Digest, November/December 2003

It's no secret that the fitness staple of the Hollywood set—YOGA—has swept the general adult populace. Once the domain of lithe lovelies like Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Jennifer Aniston, yoga classes are springing up as quickly as Starbucks franchises, and people are running to them like lemmings to the sea, or rather like downward dogs to the mat.

That there are also endless videos available for those who wish to achieve their inner peace and awkward positions in the privacy of their own homes is no surprise. I was, however, a bit skeptical when a children's yoga video made its way to our review desk. Children? YOGA? Right, I thought—the only way a child is going to stay interested is if the instructor is SpongeBob SquarePants!

With apologies to both Wai Lana and SpongeBob—was I ever wrong.

Using my own three children as yogi guinea pigs, I popped the video in after school. Clad in comfy clothes and bare feet, we hit the PLAY button and began ...

Wai Lana—an accomplished instructor and star of the world's most-watched yoga television series—has combined the elements of animation, music, rhyme, participation, and fun in this highly enjoyable video. Surrounded by children, against a tropical background of surf, sun, and palm trees, Wai Lana's quiet yet commanding voice leads both children and adults through one position to another.

Yes, I said adults. I was right there between my kids, totally enjoying achieving and holding each pose. We all giggled together as we became balloons, bridges, and even trees. When the video was over, the girls all chorused their approval and something even more surprising—a desire to do it again the next day. Since that first day, Little Yogis has become the afternoon staple in our home. Forget Nickelodeon—we are NickelYOGIing!

Their gymnastics instructors have pointed out increased balance and stretching abilities in each of my girls, and their soccer coaches have noted increased stamina and coordination. I have noted an increased sense of calm and well-being (in ALL of us)—not to mention a wonderful afternoon date with my children each day.

So give your children the gift of health, harmony, and a heck of a great alternative to just sitting and watching TV! Would make a great holiday gift for ages 3 to 8!

Top Pick. We can all benefit from some techniques to reduce tension in our lives—even our kids. The recent popularity of the timeless art of yoga is proving itself to be more than just a fad. Wai Lana, a master yoga instructor who has her own PBS series, teaches children some yoga basics in Wai Lana's Little Yogis, a mesmerizing video that has proven very fashionable with our kid testers. We've owned the video for approximately a month, and my own children pop it in almost daily after school. They love learning the different poses, especially the ones in which they "become" animals.

The video's customized yoga exercises are explained and demonstrated by Wai Lana, and a group of children follow along. Happily, the kids are quite natural and don't always perform perfectly—they look like they are having fun. Animations, and often songs, introduce each new activity and pose, such as Making Cake, Relaxation Pose, and Daydream Pose. Kids trumpet like elephants, blow an imaginary flute, and roar like a lion as they learn to get in touch with their bodies and their minds. There are plenty of opportunities to practice balance and coordination. The camel vignette begins with a special stretch as Wai Lana discusses camels with the kids. The Roly-Poly Bear pose involves lying down on the back and rolling slowly from side to side. Kids pretend to be a bear getting ready for his big sleep—hibernation. This exercise would be an excellent pre-bed exercise for kids—it allows kids to stretch and relax as the pose loosens the neck and strengthens the stomach. Helpful tips for better living are included in addition to general suggestions for getting the most out of yoga. The video is available as a stand-alone product or in a kit along with a sponge yoga mat, video tote, and a colorful poster.

The basic yoga poses help children (and any adult following along!) release tension, strengthen their growing bodies, improve their balance, and develop coordination. We are thrilled with the video and feel it belongs in every family's home. Both the physical and musical backdrops create a relaxing mood and setting, although the video is not without its share of fun. Children can do a yoga dance, roar like a lion, and bake an imaginary cake, for example. Outstanding!

Here at KidsAndKaboodle.com we get quite a few products sent to us for review on the site. Recently we received a product that I was very excited about. It's Wai Lana's Little Yogis Kit for children. The kit includes a children's yoga mat,Little Yogis video, asana poster with different exercises, and a cute tote to store everything.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I first looked at the video in the box, so I put it to the test with my 5-year-old son. We absolutely loved it!!!! We both did the entire hour-long video that night. The video is broken down into many different exercises, each introduced by an adorable, catchy animation. Wai Lana does an excellent job of keeping children's attention while showing them some great exercise in the process. One rainy day I decided to take the video to work (I teach preschool to 16 three-year-olds). We broke the children up into groups of five and did the video. I couldn't believe how interested they were in watching and participating!

I was so thrilled with Little Yogis that I emailed the company and told them how much I liked their product. They kindly supplied us with three yoga kits to give away for the next three months! Little Yogis is targeted for children ages 3 to 8 years old, but I have to say I think I enjoyed it as much as they did! The Little Yogis Kit would make a great holiday gift for any child.

"Little Yogis" Introduces Children to Yoga

In the last few years, yoga has become a mainstream exercise trend, with exercise studios cropping up in even small-town America and yoga instructional videos filling the shelves of even big-box retail giants. So it was just a matter of time before the kids asked to play, too. Wai Lana, one of the best-known yoga instructors in the world, has released a new video, Wai Lana's Little Yogis, which is a real treat. Children learn yoga positions through play, pretending to be lions, bridges, cobras, bears, and trees, coached by Wai Lana's soothing voice and contagious enthusiasm. Most enjoyable are the children in the video, who act, well, just like kids. They make occasional mistakes, sometimes get distracted by other things around them, and make this a charming way to introduce your family to yoga. Adult beginners may also appreciate this fun approach to stretching and strengthening the body.

—Metro Parent Augusta, November 2003

Wai Lana is a master yoga instructor who has had her own PBS series for many years. In this video she teaches kids yoga basics that will help your child stay fit and also provide them with a means of relaxation they can use for the rest of their life. The video is full of animations and songs that assist in demonstrating the various yoga techniques featured. Through these poses kids can practice being a multitude of different animals, which will not only engage their creativity, but also provide a fun way of practicing balance and coordination as well as releasing tension and strengthening their bodies. The Roly-Poly Bear pose will be especially helpful for those times when parents have difficulty getting their kids to bed. Kids will be able to pretend being a bear going into hibernation, which allows them to stretch and relax so that they can get the most restful sleep possible. The video combines informative information with all-out fun activities that will keep your child entertained for years to come.

Wai Lana’s Playful Yoga Video Is a Good Introduction for Kids

Wai Lana, longtime host of the PBS series Wai Lana Yoga, designed this program to bring the body-toning benefits of yoga to kids, with just enough fun to keep them interested.

The video begins with a question-and-answer session with questions only kids would ask, such as “What if I have to go pee-pee?” during the workout.

Then an animated segment introduces each move with a catchy song, sung by Wai Lana. After that we see Wai Lana surrounded by children in a park with the ocean in the background, teaching them the moves and doing them several times so the children can perfect them.

Wai Lana teaches in a very interactive way; for instance, she has kids blow up a balloon and slowly let the air out of it to show them how to breathe correctly while doing the poses.

This playful workout has kids pretending to be cobras, bears, butterflies, and beetles as they stretch and strengthen their growing bodies.

As we hear more reports of the growing obesity of children, it seems important to get kids moving in any way possible.Wai Lana’s Little Yogis is a great way to introduce fitness to your kids.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch, September 29, 2003

Worried about your kids becoming unhealthy couch potatoes? Give them an early start in yoga with Wai Lana's Little Yogis. The PBS host has released an hour-long tape that serves as a fun introduction to yoga techniques, perfect for parents to do with their kids. (It's also available as part of a Little Yogis Kit that includes a yoga mat and poster.)

The video takes viewers through several poses, many based on animals (a kid favorite). But just because it's for kids doesn't mean it's easy. Parents following along should take Wai Lana's advice early in the tape to heart: Don't overstretch, and if it hurts, don't do it. Remember this when trying the Camel, Bow, and Roly-Poly Bear especially (I speak from experience).

Wai Lana doesn't just teach positions, she also engages viewers and the kids in the video with her questions and interesting tidbits (the Lion supposedly will help stave off a cold). Find it at www.wailana.com. GRADE: A-

Health magazine online review (www.health.com), May 2004

Playful Video Yoga Class for Children: Wai Lana, host of the long-running PBS series Wai Lana Yoga, has created a 60-minute video for children. Her young students cheerfully move as she does—stretching, lengthening their spines, and having fun all the while. The video is part of a kit that includes a child-size yoga mat, a colorful bag for water and snacks, and a poster depicting 21 yoga positions. Striking poses a bit more actively and imaginatively than adults do in yoga class, the children (between the ages of 3 and 8) join Lana in becoming the outward equivalent of a butterfly, a cobra, a tree, a tail-wagging dog that changes into a Halloween cat, a bear, an elephant, and other intriguing creatures from nature.

Contemporary Pediatrics, March 2004

Lions, and Camels, and Elephants ... Oh my! If your house, like mine, can feel like a zoo, then you’ll love Wai Lana’s Little Yogis Kit. With this playful workout, kids will pretend to be cobras, bears, butterflies, and bridges as they stretch and strengthen their bodies, sharpen their minds, and improve their balance and coordination.

Little Yogis is designed for children three to eight years old and teaches the basics of yoga through demonstration and cartoons. The 60-minute video comes complete with a child-sized yoga mat, a tote with an extra pocket for water and snacks, and a large, full-color cartoon poster depicting all of the 21 poses from the video.

I tried this video out on my daughters Zoe, age 4, and Estie, age 2. (Tip #1: Never try to watch and review a video for the first time with both kids in the room!) Zoe took to the video immediately. Wai Lana’s description and the children’s demonstrations were very easy to follow and understand. The cartoons and songs in between were a creative way to break up the poses and keep kids interested. The girls loved the first pose “Balloon Belly” and the second pose “Butterfly,” but pose #3 “The Mountain” brought the video to a crashing halt when Estie decided it would be fun to topple Mt. Zoe and steal her yoga mat! (Tip #2: Two kids and one mat is never a good idea!) After making a “special” mat of blankets for Estie, the rest of the video was smooth sailing.

I, and most importantly, the girls, love this video. It has become one of our favorites. It is recommended for children ages three to eight, but my two-year-old really enjoys it as well. Estie only made it about halfway through and needed some help positioning her body but otherwise did just fine. I have found that it also helps calm my girls down and has improved Zoe’s ability to focus. I also took the kit to their playgroup and every mother wanted to know where to get one.

Wai Lana is one of the foremost personalities in the world of yoga whose television series is seen by millions of viewers on five continents. Wai Lana’s Little Yogis Kit is fun, challenging, and a great first step toward lifelong health and well-being—all without the kids even realizing they’re exercising. The Little Yogis Kit, as well as Wai Lana’s many other products, can be purchased from her website at www.wailana.com.

Q: Now that school is out, how can I keep the kids active—not glued to cartoons and computer games?

American Fitness, March/April 2004

More than 15 percent of Americans ages 6 to 19 are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Author Lizzy Rockwell writes, "The number of seriously overweight children in the United States has tripled in the past 20 years." [One primer] that could help reverse the trend:

Wai Lana's Little Yogis: Fun and Healthy Yoga, ages 3 to 8

Wai Lana has had success with yoga video instruction for adults, but now she turns her attention to youngsters. Shot at O'ahu's Ko Olina Resort, the exercises start with lying on your back, relaxing, and focusing on your breathing. Children are asked to imagine their belly to be a balloon, filling up and releasing air.

After the warmup comes the Butterfly. Feet together, bouncing your knees, imagine you are a butterfly, fluttering from flower to flower. The Tree requires balancing on one leg—not easy for some, as evidenced in our own living room and among the children in the video. Wai Lana recommends leaning against a wall for support. Meantime, she shares a thought to consider: "Think of how tolerant a tree must be. Birds nest in it, animals scratch against its bark, children sometimes play in tree houses built between their branches. We should strive to be as tolerant as a tree."

Animated characters and brief cheerful songs kick off each of the exercises, about 10 in all. By the end of the 30-minute program, children and adults will feel peaceful and relaxed. A wonderful option for settling the mind and body before bedtime.

After a few sessions, your little wiggle worm or acrobat can stretch her way into being a little yogi.

My 6-year-old daughter had no interest in any of the yoga videos I purchased for her in the past—that is, until Wai Lana's Little Yogis. This video is full of magic with Wai Lana's lovely personality, fun songs, and cartoons. It is unlike any other children's yoga video I've seen before. Now she loves doing yoga as long as she can do it with Wai Lana!!!

—A viewer from Burlington, VT

A friend bought the Little Yogis video for my daughter for Christmas. She loves it, and I really enjoy watching it too. Such a sweet way to entertain and educate kids! There should be more like this. I thought it was the best.

—Merrill, Toronto, Canada

Little Yogis is a charming and fun yoga video. Some friends got it for their three kids, and all the kids have fun doing yoga with it. The 5-year-old boy loves it so much he gets his own mat out to do it by himself. The beautiful scenery, happy music, and smiling Wai Lana make this kid yoga video exceptional. I've seen a couple of other kiddie yoga videos, and this is so much better I highly recommend it. I'm going to get it for my grandchildren.

—pdk, Cave Junction, OR

My aunt gave this to me and my little sisters and brothers a few months ago. We all love doing this and it is very much fun. It is very colorful and nice. The music is also nice. The memory cards of this tape are also really nice to play with!

Yoga Video Puts Kids on Path to Lifelong Fitness
"Feel like doing something a little different? Not something we typically feature?" This was the email that I received from the editors of ADVANCE recently.

What? A pediatric yoga video? What interest would physical therapists and PT assistants have in that? Surprisingly, this video MAY interest you.

Yoga is a Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. Yoga is also a system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline to promote control of the body and mind.

Wai Lana's Little Yogis is aimed at teaching basic yoga exercises to children. According to her website, Wai Lana is a modern-day yoga advocate, a highly energetic artist, and one of the most well known yoga teachers in the world today.

She has published several books on yoga, recorded musical albums in a variety of different styles, and produced and hosted nearly 200 half-hour television programs of yoga instruction.

In this 60-minute video, Wai Lana uses a combination of cartoons and real-life action to introduce children and their families to a playful, creative, and fun yoga workout. There is a prologue of basic questions and answers about yoga that is handled with soft, colorful cartoons. Then each section preceding each different yoga pose is again introduced with the cartoon format.

In her workout group, there are nine children from ages 3 to 10. Wai Lana encourages the children to pretend to be cobras, bears, butterflies, and bridges as they stretch and strengthen their bodies. The children have no trouble following Wai Lana's instructions and are really enjoying the exercises.

The children use yoga mats and work out on a beautiful expanse of lawn with a sandy beach and scenic rolling surf in the near background. They are pictured at the picturesque Ko Olina Resort in Oahu, HI.

As Wai Lana likens each pose to something that the children are familiar with, she incorporates information on what the activity is doing to facilitate the body with breathing, strengthening, balance, conditioning, and the like.

How could PTs and PTAs use this video at work, at home, or to benefit their children?

It would be a natural for pediatric therapists to incorporate some of the yoga activities into their routines. It could then become a mainstream activity that many children could do with peers and siblings. It could be done in physical education classes.

Therapists who work in outpatient facilities might be able to have a program for children who accompany parents to treatment. The video is so self-explanatory that most children could do the yoga without direct supervision.

Gyms and fitness facilities also could have a program for children who accompany parents to treatment.

Parents who homeschool could add this to their endeavors. After-school clubs could use the routines.

Wai Lana's yoga exercise videos have had success in increasing the appreciation of the beauty and benefits of the ancient art of yoga, and have played a significant part in the recent substantial growth in the popularity of yoga.

The field of physical therapy is increasingly striving to promote the pursuit of wellness endeavors. Wai Lana's Little Yogisis a playful way to get kids into yoga exercises, to begin to teach healthy habits that will improve their strength, balance, and coordination, and to sharpen their minds as Wai Lana shares the ancient, timeless technique of yoga.

Preschool-Grade 3—Since the early 1980s, Wai Lana has produced videos and published books on yoga, and co-directs and hosts her own PBS-TV show, which is watched by viewers around the world. Now Wai Lana has expanded her audience to include children. She begins the tape with questions and answers through which she assures the children that they do not have to copy the poses perfectly to succeed, but they should try again if they fall out of a pose, and that they can quit when they are tired or have to go to the bathroom. She also emphasizes the importance of fresh air and plenty of water. The tape begins with a breathing exercise, followed by 18 poses or asanas, in which the children dance, mix cakes, and become animals, insects, trees, and more. The poses are designed to help children release tension, strengthen their bodies, improve their balance, and develop coordination. Each pose is introduced by an animated song and then demonstrated by Wai Lana while children follow along. The exercises end with the children enjoying a lively song and dance.

The Benefits of Encouraging Children to Try Yoga Exercises
A frightening new trend in modern society is obesity in children. Youngsters who are spending more and more time in front of computers, video games, and television also face the possibility of retarded muscle development, inadequate blood flow, and poor bowel function. An increase in any type of exercise is crucial, but some children are not interested in competitive sports. Recently many families feel they have found a solution in an exercise regimen that has been around for more than five thousand years! They are trying yoga.

Even Entertainment Weekly magazine has written in a recent issue about "schoolkids doing yoga." Children need and love yoga exercises. Picture a little three-year-old rolling around on top of a giant purple yoga ball; a child who is five on a colorful foam mat, bending and twisting his or her body to make it look like different animals; or a ten-year-old taking pride in holding an asana pose for the full count given them by an instructor. Yoga helps youngsters stretch and tone their muscles, keeps their blood flow and internal organs in a healthier state, and assists them in learning relaxation techniques.

Wai Lana, who is considered to be one of the best known and most popular yoga instructors in the world, says, "Yoga is so versatile that anyone of any age can do it. Small children can begin simply by watching and imitating others who are doing it. They will also benefit greatly from the calming influence of yoga sound meditation. Older children can be challenged by the more energetic yoga exercises that strengthen and build growing bodies. I have three children. From the time they were born, they have been vegetarians and practitioners of yoga.

"The real goal of yoga is not how well you do a pose physically, but how much you are getting out of the exercises that you do. Are you learning to breathe more deeply? Do you feel your muscles releasing? Do you feel more calm and content inside? Children learn from what is around them, and if they grow up around yoga, they will have this valuable knowledge to use as teens and young adults. Think of how much closer families would be if they all got together in the morning or the evening to do yoga together!"

Wai Lana points out that yoga is one of the few exercises that the entire family can do together, whether the group includes small children, teens, young adults, parents, and even grandparents. It also is an exercise that can be beneficial even in short time slots, whether it is ten minutes in the morning before work and school, or fifteen minutes in the evening after the last TV show. Adults are doing a bit of yoga on their lunch breaks, and many schoolteachers are incorporating yoga exercises into their classroom teachings. Of course, yoga can be done virtually anywhere, especially on the lawn or any carpeted surface, with no direct instruction. But many practitioners like to have a yoga mat to kneel or lie on and prefer having an instructor, whether from a television show, video, or CD. Wai Lana says that getting into a regular routine is one of the most valuable aspects of doing yoga, because it is a "good habit" instead of a "bad habit" like snacking on junk food between meals or wasting time channel-surfing TV with no specific purpose.

According to Wai Lana, "Yoga brings great pleasure and satisfaction. We learn to relax while developing a stronger and healthier body. We learn to let go of mental stress. And through yoga meditation, we begin to feel fulfilled within. With yoga you can relax, stretch, tone, and strengthen your body, while at the same time you calm your mind. It helps you lose weight, increase circulation, build flexibility, relieve stress, avoid injuries, breathe better, and renew energy. It is important for people to take time for themselves and to improve their body and mind.

"Yoga is about uncovering and discovering the beauty and pleasure and contentment that is already there. For example, our bodies know how to feel good and be healthy, and yoga asanas help to bring the body back to its natural state of health and relaxation. This is important for anyone at any age, but what could be better than to introduce the benefits of yoga to children at a young age, in hopes that this is something they can continue to use their whole lives to make them look and feel better."

Through her internationally acclaimed television series (on PBS), plus videos, musical albums, and books, Wai Lana regularly assists millions of people in utilizing yoga to improve their lives. She has expanded her yoga instruction to specifically assist children with the just-released Wai Lana's Little Yogis video. Her products are available in stores or at www.wailana.com. ln her videos and on her TV show, Wai Lana is known for her method of following the stretching portions with uplifting dancing and then a time of meditation.

Our take: We rolled out our mats, flipped on the video, and let yoga instructor Wai Lana lead us through the Balloon Belly, Rocking Beetle, and Jelly Legs. Our 6-year-old student found it hard to sustain interest past Making Cake—the video is an hour long, after all—but the pose-by-pose format makes it easy to stop, or jump in again, at any point along the way.

ADVANCE for Occupational Therapy Practitioners, December 29, 2003

The growing interest in yoga is expanding to little yogis; at least, that is what Wai Lana, host of her own PBS yoga series, is thinking. Wai Lana designed a new Little Yogis Kit, specifically designed for children ages 3 to 8.

If yoga is good for mom and dad, it certainly must be good for kids to begin stretching and strengthening their bodies and their minds. And mom and dad also can enjoy Wai Lana’s 60-minute video, which has the personable teacher and several little yogis pretending to be cobras, bears, butterflies, bridges, trees, and more as they perform various yoga asanas.

Wai Lana's theory is that with child obesity growing, yoga is a good way to get children exercising in a safe, fun way that will hopefully become a lifelong healthy habit.

Besides the video instruction, the Little Yogis Kit includes a kid-size (24-inch by 60-inch) yoga mat detailed with little cartoon yogis in action, a colorful, sturdy yoga mat bag, and a large full-color poster with 21 yoga exercises in cartoon style.

Infectious Diseases in Children, September 2003

Geared toward children ages 3 to 8, this delightful introduction to yoga features noted instructor Wai Lana, who effectively uses songs and child-friendly explanations (“be like a tree”; “roar like a lion”) to encourage kids to find the fun, as well as the health benefits, of traditional yoga poses. Children of various ages demonstrate how to do the poses, and while some of the younger children are shown “wandering” more than exercising, this actually give parents reasonable expectations for what their children may accomplish at different ages. Parents will also appreciate many of the explanations of the possible benefits of the exercises, ranging from anger management to relaxing before sleep. Highly recommended.

Video Librarian, January/February 2004

Great for the classroom: I am delighted by the way my students are captivated by Wai Lana's Little Yogis video and how excited they are to do the poses.

The best gift you can ever give your child: Wai Lana's Little Yogis Kit is the greatest gift for kids and moms alike! My children are always eager to pull their little yogi mats out and follow along with Wai Lana to do the fun poses—they absolutely love her! Not only is it so much fun for them, but I notice how it noticeably calms my children down and relaxes them. In addition, I've noticed with my 4-year-old how much her coordination and balance have improved, and my 7-year-old is able to focus much more easily now than ever before. The poster is adorable and a great tool that makes it all the more fun for them. I highly recommend this video, hands down!

Children love yoga: Wai Lana's Little Yogis Kit is complete with mat, video, a poster of poses with instructions, and a carrying case.

The video is delightful. The first few minutes of the tape provide instructions in a question-answer format with children's voices asking the questions and Wai Lana explaining yoga precautions such as doing the poses on an empty stomach and with bare feet. This segment is animated with the text printed on the screen.

The production is extraordinary and deserves the awards it has received. Interwoven with colorful animation and an outdoor classroom of children doing yoga with Wai Lana, the class includes exercises, breathing practice, and rest periods. Sweet music and animated animal segments help Wai Lana explain yoga. You and the children you buy this for will get a warm, fuzzy feeling watching the positive interaction among the students and with Wai Lana.

The yoga mat is one of those high-quality ones that won't stretch out of shape with the moves and is decorated with helpful pictures of children in yoga poses. Completely washable.

The poster is colorful and shows a diversity of children performing poses, with easy-to-follow written instructions alongside each.

This video, mat, and poster set would be great for schools, kinder-exercise programs, and parents and grandparents to have on hand.

Also, an all-in-one gift for birthday or holiday.

—VHSonline.com customer reviews, January 2004

Wai Lana, host of the long-running PBS series Wai Lana Yoga and star of a dozen popular yoga videos, has made a yoga video especially for children ages 3 to 8. The video features Wai Lana and a group of kids of different ages pretending to be cobras, butterflies, and other animals and objects as they work through a series of beginning yoga poses. This video is a great way to get started with yoga.

Young children will enjoy Wai Lana's playful suggestions of sounds to make with each pose; roaring in the lion pose will be a favorite. Kids will enjoy the exercises and the bouncy yoga dance at the end of the video while improving balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility. Yoga has been proven to have a calming effect on children and reduces stress, so while they play, kids will be discovering the benefits of yoga.

The video includes a short song animated with cartoons before each exercise, and each exercise is presented at a slow and gentle pace. The video is 60 minutes long, but can easily be stopped after any exercise and continued later. For children with a shorter attention span, the exercises can be stretched over several days, or even a week for the youngest children.

Despite the fun approach, Wai Lana careful and expertly presents each exercise so that children learn to do it the correct way. The children in the video do the poses with varying degrees of skill, which keeps the exercises from seeming too hard while still presenting good examples of how to do each pose.

This is a great family video, as adults can attempt the poses along with the children. Those new to yoga will find the exercises challenging but not so hard that they give up. Older children may find the cartoons and music too cloying, but will not be able to resist trying to show up their younger siblings and parents. (For those who only have children ages 10 and above, Wai Lana's beginning yoga video would be a better choice.) Preschool and kindergarten teachers will love this video too—what a great way to get the wiggles out on a rainy day!

The complete kit includes the video, a kid-size yogi mat, a colorful poster with the 21 yoga exercises illustrated and explained, and a plastic tote that holds it all. The mat is big enough to be practical, and the poster is useful when you cannot play the video or if you just want to practice some of the poses. Highly recommended for ages 3-8.

Anyone familiar with Wai Lana's popular adult series on PBS will recognize the instructor's soothing voice and gentle yoga instruction. In this video for children, "little yogis" have fun becoming cobras, bears, and butterflies, happily oblivious to the fact that they are strengthening their bodies, sharpening their minds, and improving balance and coordination at the same time.

Questions about the children's safety and comfort (What if I have to go to the bathroom?) are answered at the beginning, then each new pose, such as Balloon Belly, is introduced by short whimsical cartoons that hold even the littlest yogis' attention.

The video is geared toward kids 3 to 8. A Little Yogis Kit—including the video, a kid-size yoga mat, a poster, and a colorful tote bag—is also available.

Gentle and beautiful, much like Wai Lana herself, this new yoga tape for children is as much fun to do with your children as it is to watch. The scenery is beautiful and Wai Lana's gentle voice puts you in a peaceful place straight away. My 5½-year-old commented on the songs which he thought were fun. The postures are easy to follow and the tape moves at a pace fast enough to keep a little one's attention, but not so fast that they get lost. Children will have fun using their imagination to pretend that they are cobras or butterflies as they are stretching and exercising their mind and bodies. The relaxation part of the tape is a real gift that we can give our children. Imagine how the world would be in 20 years from now if all of our children learned to relax and take care of themselves! This tape is certainly a good starting point toward a peaceful future. My kids adore this video. It's so relaxing and it's fun too. Wai Lana instructs kids how to do all sorts of yoga poses, things like the Lion (kids even get to roar!), Making Cake (a stirring-the-cake-batter activity), and more. Of course, I've heard about yoga (who hasn't?), but never tried it myself. Doing some of the poses along with my kids has inspired me to try more. This is an amazing video that teaches children how to be more coordinated and concerned about their body health. Very recommended!!

Wai Lana will also be releasing a Little Yogis CD featuring 22 of her original songs perfect for kids to dance to, do yoga to, play to, and even fall asleep to.

Wai Lana's new "Little Yogis Kit" is a dream for parents. It engages, entertains, and delights children while simultaneously stretching and strengthening their bodies, sharpening their minds, and improving their balance and coordination, all without the kids even realizing they're exercising. That yoga seems to have a calming effect on children is a secret parents are now wisely embracing.

"If kids are going to watch TV, they may as well watch something that's good for them," says Wai Lana, "and with child obesity a growing worldwide problem, what better way to get kids exercising than making it fun for them? You truly are helping them develop healthy habits that will continue benefiting them for the rest of their lives."

With entertaining yoga videos like Wai Lana's Little Yogis, it's clear that yoga is fast becoming a fun, bonding, and de-stressing activity for both kids and parents. This thought was echoed by Elayne Blythe, president of Film Advisory Board, in presenting Wai Lana's Little Yogis video with its Award of Excellence for quality family/children's entertainment. Ms. Blythe said, "This tape is great for children, but adults who are newcomers to yoga can benefit from this video as well! Great exercises for all ages!" Ms. Blythe went on to say, "What a beautiful tape! Charming, with beautiful scenery. It's her best!"

Children pretend to be cobras, bears, butterflies, and bridges as they stretch and strengthen their bodies, sharpen their minds, and improve their balance and coordination with this 60-minute video. It's a playful way to get children into healthy habits.

Yoga is a wonderful activity that helps adults stay in shape physically and mentally. The techniques that are used help relax us and help reduce stress from our everyday lives. But yoga isn't only for adults—it's a great activity for our children too!

Wai Lana, who is host of the PBS series Wai Lana Yoga, has designed a yoga kit that is perfect for children ages 3-8. The "Little Yogis Kit" includes a 60-minute video, a child-size foam yoga mat, a poster showing various simple asana poses and stretches, and a colorful tote bag with a shoulder strap.

The video begins with a few questions from children about yoga, which are answered by Wai Lana. Songs and cartoons are then shown with the name of a yoga pose, and young children are shown practicing different poses with Wai Lana as she narrates. Each pose begins with a little cartoon and the name of the pose.

The foam mat is the perfect size (1/8"H x 24"W x 60"L) for children to practice yoga on, and it is very lightweight and durable. The accompanying tote bag with shoulder strap has a place for your child to carry the video (or maybe a few snacks :), mat, and poster and bring them wherever they wish to practice yoga.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this kit—the video is calming, shows children doing easy yoga poses, and will help your child keep in shape. The mat, which rolls up, is lightweight and portable, and fits nicely into the clear tote bag. The poster is nice—it shows 21 illustrations of children doing the poses that were on the video. All together, this kit makes a wonderful product for your own child or a gift for someone you care about :).
